A Coffin Mimic in Dungeons & Dragons is a variant of the classic Mimic, a shape-shifting predator capable of assuming the form of inanimate objects to lure unsuspecting prey. While the standard Mimic most often disguises itself as a treasure chest, the Coffin Mimic takes on a more sinister and thematic form — that of a burial coffin or sarcophagus. It is commonly found in crypts, catacombs, mausoleums, or necromantic lairs where the shape of a coffin would arouse no suspicion. To the unwary adventurer, it appears to be an ordinary funerary container, perhaps holding treasure, relics, or the remains of a fallen hero. In truth, it is a living creature waiting patiently for someone to open its lid, triggering its violent ambush.
When a creature comes close enough or attempts to open the “coffin,” the Mimic reveals its true nature. Its surface transforms into a glistening mass of adhesive flesh, its interior lined with toothy maws and grasping pseudopods. Victims who touch the creature often find themselves stuck fast to its glue-like surface, unable to pull away as the Mimic crushes or bites them with surprising ferocity. Like other Mimics, the Coffin Mimic possesses a cunning intelligence. It uses its environment to its advantage, remaining still until the most opportune moment, and sometimes working in concert with undead creatures or necromancers who appreciate its defensive usefulness.
The Coffin Mimic’s adaptation reflects the ingenuity of dungeon ecologies in D&D. By imitating something that naturally draws the curiosity of adventurers—especially in tomb-like settings—it ensures a steady supply of prey. In some tales, Coffin Mimics are even said to develop from ordinary Mimics that settled near graveyards and evolved to blend with their surroundings. Others suggest that dark magic or necromantic experimentation created this variant, giving rise to a creature that blurs the line between the living and the unliving. Whether encountered guarding a vampire’s resting place or lurking in a forgotten tomb, a Coffin Mimic remains a gruesome reminder that in Dungeons & Dragons, even the dead are not always what they seem.
