In Dungeons & Dragons, a Darkmantle is a subterranean creature resembling a small, flying manta ray with leathery wings. It measures about three feet across and is typically found in dark, cavernous environments such as underground tunnels or dungeons. Despite its appearance, the Darkmantle is not a gentle creature – it is predatory and aggressive.

Darkmantles have evolved a unique hunting strategy. They blend into the darkness with their dark, mottled coloration, making them nearly invisible to their prey. When a potential victim wanders too close, the Darkmantle swoops down silently, attempting to envelop its target with its wings and mantle. Once it has engulfed its prey, the Darkmantle constricts its victim with surprising strength, suffocating them before consuming their remains.

These creatures are often encountered in groups, as they prefer to hunt cooperatively. They coordinate their attacks, using their ability to blend into the darkness to confuse and overwhelm their prey.
