A Death Dragon, often referred to as a "Dracolich," is an undead dragon in Dungeons & Dragons, typically created through dark necromantic rituals. These creatures are the result of a dragon voluntarily or unwillingly transforming into an undead entity, often in pursuit of immortality. The process of becoming a Dracolich involves the dragon's soul being bound to a phylactery, a magical object that preserves the dragon’s essence, while its physical form is reanimated. Unlike living dragons, a Death Dragon is immune to aging, disease, and poison, and it possesses resistance to most forms of magic, though it is vulnerable to the effects of certain spells and abilities that target undead creatures.
Death Dragons retain all the abilities and intelligence of their living counterparts, including breath weapons and magical spells, but they are also empowered by the necrotic energy that sustains them. They often use their power to command legions of undead creatures or pursue dark ambitions. The transformation often twists their appearance, leaving them with gaunter, more sinister features, such as glowing, empty eyes or a rotting, skeletal body.
These dragons are typically associated with powerful necromancers, liches, or evil deities, who either create them or seek to control them. While they are often solitary creatures, some may form alliances with other undead forces, becoming formidable threats to adventurers. Their presence in a campaign often signals an ongoing necromantic ritual or an impending catastrophe, as they are symbols of death and destruction, their every move an ominous sign of doom.
