In Dungeons & Dragons, Deep Ones are amphibious humanoid creatures often associated with dark, alien deities and malevolent, oceanic forces. They are heavily inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft, particularly from "The Shadow over Innsmouth." In the game, Deep Ones are commonly depicted as sinister, fish-like beings, with their grotesque appearance reflecting their connection to the deep seas and otherworldly powers.
Deep Ones typically serve elder gods or ancient oceanic deities like Dagon or entities related to the Far Realm, a chaotic and alien plane of existence. They inhabit coastal areas, underwater ruins, and deep ocean trenches, often preying on coastal communities. Their society is highly secretive and organized around cultic worship, with an emphasis on maintaining the purity of their aquatic bloodlines through hybridization with humans.
One of the more disturbing aspects of Deep Ones is their ability to interbreed with humans. Offspring from such unions may appear human initially but eventually transform into Deep Ones, undergoing a metamorphosis as they age. These hybrids often act as infiltrators within human society, allowing the Deep Ones to extend their influence over surface dwellers.
In terms of gameplay, Deep Ones or their hybrid descendants can be used as antagonists in campaigns involving themes of cosmic horror, forbidden knowledge, or ancient underwater civilizations. Their presence often introduces a sense of dread and mystery, particularly when players uncover their hybrid nature or the dark rituals associated with their worship. As enemies, Deep Ones typically possess amphibious traits, the ability to breathe underwater, and possibly innate spellcasting or psionic abilities.
