Driders are created when a drow—a dark elf born in the subterranean Underdark—fails a test of loyalty or skill in Lolth’s eyes. Instead of death, the drow is transformed into a hybrid creature, part elf and part spider, as a cruel form of punishment and eternal servitude. The upper body remains humanoid, retaining the intelligence, dexterity, and magical abilities of a drow, while the lower body is that of a monstrous spider, complete with eight powerful legs, silk-producing glands, and venomous fangs. This combination makes driders both cunning spellcasters and formidable physical predators, blending the agility and tactics of a drow with the raw predatory instincts of a spider.

Driders are often depicted as agents of Lolth, serving as enforcers, scouts, or executioners in her dark plots.
