A Dryad in Dungeons & Dragons is a fey creature bound to a specific tree, usually an oak, and serves as its guardian. They embody nature’s beauty, grace, and mystery, resembling ethereal humanoid women with bark-like skin and hair that flows like leaves in the wind. Dryads are peaceful and reclusive, avoiding conflict unless their tree or forest is threatened. They possess innate magical abilities, including the power to charm creatures, teleport between trees, and communicate with animals and plants.

In most editions of D&D, Dryads are classified as fey, emphasizing their otherworldly origins and deep connection to the natural world. They are typically neutral in alignment, caring little for mortal concerns beyond their forest’s well-being. If their bonded tree is harmed or destroyed, they suffer greatly, often weakening or dying alongside it. Some legends suggest that Dryads can form deep bonds with humanoids, leading travelers astray with their enchanting presence or even forming rare friendships.

In combat, Dryads prefer to avoid violence, using spells like Entangle, Charm Person, and Pass Without Trace to elude or neutralize threats. They are elusive, capable of vanishing into the trees, making them difficult to catch or harm. Some powerful Dryads may be allied with druids or forest spirits, protecting sacred groves or ancient woodland secrets.

Encounters with Dryads in D&D often involve themes of nature’s balance, mystical beauty, and the consequences of harming the wilderness. While they are not inherently hostile, reckless adventurers who disrespect their domain may find themselves lost in an enchanted forest, ensnared by vines, or trapped under the spell of a beguiling fey. Those who approach with respect may instead find a valuable ally in the heart of the wild.
