In Dungeons & Dragons, a ferret is a small mammal often used as a familiar by spellcasters or kept as a pet. As a familiar, it grants its master advantages such as heightened senses, stealth, or even assistance in scouting. Ferrets are typically classified as Tiny Beasts with low hit points, minimal attack capabilities, and a high Dexterity score, making them agile and adept at slipping into small spaces.
Mechanically, ferrets have been represented in various editions, often under the "weasel" stat block, which shares similar traits. They usually possess keen senses, granting advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks relying on smell or hearing. Their small size and agility make them excellent at stealth, allowing them to evade detection easily.
For a wizard, warlock, or other spellcaster using the Find Familiar spell, a ferret familiar can serve as a spy, messenger, or distraction. Through the familiar bond, the caster can see through the ferret’s eyes and hear what it hears, providing tactical advantages. While it cannot attack, it can use the Help action to assist in combat, granting an ally advantage on their next attack roll.
Narratively, ferrets can add personality to a character, reflecting traits like curiosity, playfulness, and mischief. They may be part of a rogue’s toolkit for sneaking and pickpocketing or serve as a companion to a ranger or druid. Some settings and homebrew materials introduce magical or awakened ferrets with unique abilities, further expanding their role.
Though not a powerhouse in combat, a ferret’s utility, stealth, and charm make it a valuable companion in any adventuring party. Whether as a familiar or a beloved pet, these nimble creatures bring both practical and roleplaying benefits to a campaign.
