A Fungal Beast in Dungeons and Dragons is a monstrous entity born from the merging of corrupted plant life and dark, necrotic energies. These creatures are often found deep within ancient forests, overgrown ruins, or damp caverns where rot and decay hold sway. Standing anywhere from human-sized to towering over men, a Fungal Beast appears as a twisted amalgamation of rotting vegetation, bulbous fungi, and creeping vines. Its form is typically humanoid but lacks true flesh, its body instead composed of spongy mycelium and hardened fungal plates. Its eyes, if present, gleam with eerie bioluminescence, and its movements are slow but unsettlingly deliberate.
One of the most terrifying traits of the Fungal Beast is its ability to propagate corruption. Spore clouds billow from its body with every impact or breath, choking the air with infectious decay. Creatures exposed to these spores risk becoming carriers of the same fungal blight, spreading the infestation further or even becoming host to parasitic growths themselves. These beasts often act as guardians of tainted ground, either spawned from or under the sway of malevolent forces such as demon lords like Zuggtmoy, the Lady of Rot and Decay.
In combat, Fungal Beasts are resilient and relentless. Their bodies can reform from damage that would fell a normal creature, and severed limbs may sprout into smaller symbiotic horrors. They strike with vine-covered limbs, lash out with spore-infused tendrils, and can even emit toxic bursts when threatened. Their connection to the natural world is twisted, allowing them to control nearby plant life, turning the terrain into a treacherous trap.
Encountering a Fungal Beast is often a sign that a once-thriving ecosystem has been overwhelmed by corruption. Adventurers who face such creatures must act quickly to cleanse the source before the fungal plague spreads beyond control.
