A Gazebo Mimic is a humorous yet terrifying twist on the classic mimic, a shapeshifting predator that disguises itself as an inanimate object to ambush adventurers. Unlike a typical mimic, which often takes the form of chests or doors, the Gazebo Mimic assumes the shape of a grand, decorative gazebo—an inviting yet ominous structure lurking in parks, gardens, or castle courtyards. This monstrous gazebo waits patiently for unsuspecting adventurers to seek shelter or rest within its grasp, only to spring to life with gnashing teeth, crushing walls, and adhesive pseudopods.
The Gazebo Mimic is largely inspired by the legendary "Eric and the Gazebo" tale from early D&D fandom, where a player, misunderstanding the nature of a simple gazebo in a game description, attempted to attack it, prompting the Dungeon Master to humorously imply it was a powerful entity. Over time, this joke evolved into an actual creature in homebrew settings and some published adventures.
As a mimic variant, the Gazebo Mimic possesses traits such as shapechanging, adhesive surfaces that trap victims, and a powerful bite. Unlike smaller mimics, it can engulf multiple creatures at once, slowly digesting them or crushing them within its shifting walls. Some versions even feature hypnotic effects, luring creatures inside before sealing them within.
While often played for comedy, a Gazebo Mimic can be a serious threat, especially if adventurers are caught off guard. It exemplifies the mimic’s deceptive nature taken to an extreme, proving that in Dungeons & Dragons, even the most harmless-looking structures could be deadly. Whether used as a joke encounter or a genuine horror, the Gazebo Mimic remains a favorite among Dungeon Masters seeking to surprise their players in the most unexpected way.
