In Dungeons & Dragons, a Ghost Professor is not an official creature or character class found in the core rulebooks, but it is a concept that appears in homebrew campaigns, unofficial supplements, or as a flavorful NPC archetype created by Dungeon Masters to enrich their world. The term typically refers to the ghost of a once-living academic, often a wizard, sage, or arcane scholar, who has remained tethered to the material plane due to an unresolved purpose related to their intellectual pursuits or unfinished teachings. These spectral educators are often bound to universities, arcane libraries, ancient ruins, or magical towers where they once taught or conducted research. Their unfinished business may involve a forgotten spell, an incomplete treatise, or the need to pass on critical knowledge to a worthy pupil.

The Ghost Professor may serve as a unique NPC with both narrative and mechanical functions. They often act as quest givers, offering players riddles, lessons, or secrets in exchange for assistance in completing their final goals. Sometimes they are benevolent, eager to teach and pass on their knowledge before moving on to the afterlife. Other times, they may be bitter, cursed, or maddened by centuries of spectral existence, becoming a dangerous obstacle or even an antagonist if their goals clash with the players'.

Mechanically, the Ghost Professor may use the stat block of a standard Ghost from the Monster Manual, possibly modified with spellcasting abilities or higher Intelligence to reflect their scholarly nature. In combat, they could combine ghostly traits like possession and etherealness with arcane spells, making them tricky opponents or elusive allies. Thematically, they serve to blend the eerie with the intellectual, adding both mystery and depth to academic or magical settings. This character type adds a ghostly twist to the classic trope of the wise old mentor.
