In Dungeons & Dragons, a griffin is a powerful and majestic magical creature that combines the features of a lion and an eagle. Its front half, including its head, wings, and forelegs, is that of a giant eagle, while its hindquarters are those of a lion. This combination results in a formidable and versatile beast known for both its strength and agility. Griffins are renowned for their keen eyesight and sharp talons, making them adept hunters. They typically inhabit mountainous regions, where they establish nests on high cliffs or within caves.

Griffins are known for their territorial nature and fierce protection of their nests, particularly when guarding their eggs or young. They possess a strong instinct for hunting and are often seen swooping down from great heights to snatch prey, which can include large animals and even humanoids. Their diet mainly consists of meat, and they are particularly fond of horse flesh, which can make them a significant threat to travelers and adventurers who use horses for transportation.

In terms of gameplay, griffins are often encountered as challenging adversaries or potential mounts. Training a griffin as a mount is a perilous endeavor that requires patience, skill, and bravery, but a successfully trained griffin provides a formidable aerial advantage. They are not inherently evil creatures but are best approached with caution due to their aggressive defense mechanisms.

Griffins symbolize nobility and strength in many D&D settings, often associated with heraldry and the crests of noble houses. They may be sought after for their feathers, which are prized for use in magical components and potions. In campaigns, griffins can serve various roles, from guardians of ancient treasures to the noble steeds of powerful knights, adding rich narrative possibilities to the world of Dungeons & Dragons.
