A Gryphon, or Griffin, in Dungeons & Dragons is a majestic and fierce magical beast with the body of a lion and the head, wings, and forelegs of an eagle. Known for their sharp talons, powerful beaks, and keen eyesight, Gryphons are both formidable predators and highly sought-after mounts. They are typically found in mountainous or hilly regions, nesting in high, remote areas where they can swoop down on prey with devastating speed.
Gryphons are intelligent enough to be trained, though they remain wild at heart and are difficult to tame. Many warriors, knights, and elite cavalry units prize them as aerial mounts, and they are a common feature in the armies of powerful kingdoms. Their natural hostility toward horses makes them a challenge to integrate into standard cavalry forces, as they may attack other mounts when provoked.
In combat, a Gryphon uses its flight to its advantage, diving onto enemies with a combination of claw and beak attacks. Their ability to fly makes them valuable for reconnaissance, hit-and-run tactics, or as guardians of treasure hoards. Some adventurers seek out Gryphon eggs or younglings to rear and train, though this is a dangerous endeavor, as adult Gryphons are fiercely protective of their nests.
Within the lore of Dungeons & Dragons, Gryphons are often associated with nobility, courage, and the protection of sacred places. They are sometimes depicted as celestial beings or divine messengers, though in most settings, they are simply magnificent, non-magical creatures. Whether as deadly foes, prized steeds, or symbols of valor, Gryphons remain an iconic presence in many D&D worlds.
