In Dungeons & Dragons (D&D), a horse is a common, versatile creature often used by adventurers for transportation, labor, and occasionally, in combat. Horses in D&D are typically classified into different types, such as light horses, heavy horses, and warhorses, each with varying attributes and purposes. These animals are valued for their speed, endurance, and carrying capacity, making them essential companions in many campaigns.

Light horses, for example, are fast and agile, making them ideal for quick travel and scouting missions. They have moderate hit points and armor class, reflecting their relatively lower resilience compared to their heavier counterparts. Heavy horses, on the other hand, are sturdier and can carry more weight, making them suitable for pulling carts or carrying heavily armored riders. Warhorses are specifically trained for combat, featuring higher hit points, better armor class, and the ability to fight alongside their riders, often with trampling attacks and higher morale in battle.

In the game mechanics, horses are usually controlled by the Dungeon Master (DM) but can be guided by players through commands and skill checks. They can be acquired through purchase, taming in the wild, or as part of a character's background or class features, such as the Paladin's "Find Steed" spell, which can summon a magical horse. Horses add a layer of strategy and logistical consideration to gameplay, influencing travel speed, encumbrance limits, and tactical options during encounters.

In role-playing, horses often become beloved companions, with players naming and developing attachments to them. They contribute to the richness of the game's narrative, providing opportunities for storytelling, challenges, and the deepening of the adventurers' journey. Whether racing to a distant city to deliver a crucial message or charging into battle, horses in D&D play a vital role in both the mundane and epic aspects of the game world.
