In Dungeons & Dragons (D&D), a Kobold is a small, reptilian humanoid creature known for its cunning, craftiness, and often cowardly behavior. Standing around 2 to 2.5 feet tall, Kobolds have scaly skin ranging from rusty brown to black, and they possess a slight snout with sharp teeth. They typically inhabit underground caverns, abandoned mines, or dark forests, forming tight-knit communities led by a powerful leader, often a particularly intelligent or magically adept Kobold known as a "Kobold Dragonshield" or "Kobold Scale Sorcerer."

Despite their diminutive size and relatively low physical strength, Kobolds are resourceful and use cunning traps, ambushes, and overwhelming numbers to overcome their foes. They often employ crude weapons such as spears, slings, and daggers, and may utilize makeshift armor crafted from scavenged materials.

In Kobold society, strength and cunning are highly valued traits, and Kobolds compete fiercely for status within their hierarchies. They worship draconic beings, particularly dragons, as their ultimate patrons and often see themselves as distant descendants of dragons, though this claim is dubious at best. Kobold lairs are frequently adorned with crude tributes to dragons, and they may attempt to curry favor with true dragons through offerings or service.

Kobolds have a deep-seated fear and hatred of more powerful creatures, especially adventurers and larger humanoids like humans, elves, and dwarves. This fear often drives them to aggressive behavior or to seek alliances with other dark creatures to bolster their defenses.

While individually weak, Kobolds can pose a significant threat in large numbers or when they have the advantage of terrain and traps. They make common adversaries for low-level adventuring parties, providing a challenging and diverse encounter that emphasizes strategy and resourcefulness over brute force. Despite their reputation as mere nuisances, Kobolds can prove to be cunning adversaries or even reluctant allies in the complex world of Dungeons & Dragons.
