In Dungeons & Dragons, a Libitinarii is a role often associated with necromancy or funerary practices. While the term itself isn’t a standard creature or class in the core D&D rulebooks, it is derived from historical and mythological sources. The name “Libitinarii” comes from the Roman deity Libitina, who was associated with death, burial, and the afterlife. In ancient Rome, Libitinarii were individuals who handled death-related tasks, such as funeral arrangements, embalming, and overseeing the deceased's passage to the afterlife.

In a D&D context, a Libitinarii could be an NPC (Non-Player Character) or even a unique subclass, often found in campaigns that involve themes of death, the undead, or necromancy. These individuals could be seen as undertakers, gravekeepers, or even spiritual guides, depending on the campaign setting. They might serve as conduits between the living and the dead, assisting in the safe passage of souls or preventing disturbances from restless spirits.

The role of a Libitinarii could be further fleshed out with arcane knowledge or divine connections, particularly if the character is attuned to the darker side of magic. Such characters might have abilities that allow them to commune with the dead, raise the deceased as undead minions, or manipulate death itself. They may act as protectors of graveyards, tombs, or other sacred sites where the dead rest, ensuring that the boundaries between life and death are not breached.

A Libitinarii might also be a part of a faction that worships a god of death, such as Kelemvor in the Forgotten Realms, or another deity associated with the afterlife. Their duties could involve both ritual and practical tasks related to death, with their motivations ranging from honoring the dead to exploiting death for personal power or knowledge. This figure could offer players quests involving the undead, the collection of ancient relics, or guidance through the treacherous realms of the dead.
