A Lich in *Dungeons & Dragons* is a powerful undead spellcaster who has achieved immortality through dark magic. Originally a mortal wizard, sorcerer, or cleric, the Lich undergoes a vile ritual to bind their soul to a phylactery—a magical object that houses their essence, preventing true death. As long as the phylactery remains intact, the Lich can regenerate its physical form even if destroyed, making it nearly impossible to kill permanently.

Driven by a relentless pursuit of knowledge, power, or a specific goal, Liches often isolate themselves in hidden lairs, surrounded by ancient tomes, powerful artifacts, and legions of undead minions. Their bodies, reduced to skeletal forms, exude a chilling aura of death. Despite their decayed appearance, they retain all the knowledge and magical power they possessed in life, often enhancing their abilities through centuries of study and practice.

Liches are often depicted as cunning and patient masterminds, orchestrating elaborate schemes that can span centuries. Their goals can vary from the acquisition of forbidden knowledge to the domination or destruction of entire realms. Due to their undead nature, Liches are immune to many forms of harm that would affect living creatures, such as poison or disease. However, their reliance on their phylactery is a potential weakness. If a Lich's phylactery is located and destroyed, the Lich can be permanently slain. Nonetheless, finding and destroying a Lich’s phylactery is no simple task, often requiring a perilous quest that involves deciphering cryptic clues, braving dangerous environments, and overcoming powerful guardians.
