In Dungeons & Dragons, a mummy is an undead creature created through ancient rituals that preserve a body after death, often for religious or ceremonial purposes. These beings are typically found guarding tombs, temples, or sacred relics, having been raised to serve as eternal protectors. Mummies are most commonly associated with desert environments and ancient civilizations, drawing inspiration from real-world Egyptian mythology but adapted to the fantasy setting of D&D.

In game mechanics, mummies are categorized as medium undead, often of lawful evil alignment. Their bodies are wrapped in preserved, desiccated wrappings, and they exude an aura of dread. This is reflected in their signature ability, Dreadful Glare, which can paralyze or frighten opponents. A mummy’s physical strength and unholy endurance make it a formidable melee combatant, and it typically attacks with a powerful rotting touch. This touch does more than inflict physical damage—it also carries a supernatural disease known as mummy rot. This affliction prevents natural healing and can be deadly over time unless cured with magic such as Lesser Restoration or Remove Curse.

Mummies are often encountered as part of a larger dungeon or tomb adventure, serving as guardians placed by long-dead cultures to protect sacred treasures or cursed artifacts. Their presence is usually tied to a story or myth, and defeating them can involve more than brute strength—it may require understanding ancient customs, solving puzzles, or breaking curses.

More powerful versions, such as Mummy Lords, retain spellcasting abilities and high-level intelligence, often functioning as high priests or royalty in life. They add layers of danger through lair actions and legendary resistances, making them suitable as bosses or climactic villains.

Narratively, mummies add a sense of eerie antiquity and divine retribution, often invoking themes of desecration, cursed legacy, and the consequences of disturbing the dead.
