A mummy in Dungeons & Dragons is an undead creature created through ancient funerary rites, dark magic, and powerful curses intended to preserve both body and soul beyond death. Typically originating from long-dead civilizations obsessed with immortality, mummies are often the remains of priests, nobles, kings, or other individuals of great importance whose burial rituals were twisted into necromantic practices. Bound to tombs, temples, or sacred relics, they exist as eternal guardians or vengeful revenants, animated by divine punishment or profane sorcery rather than simple necromancy.

Physically, a mummy appears as a desiccated humanoid corpse wrapped in aged burial linens, its flesh preserved unnaturally by embalming oils and arcane rites. Despite their slow, deliberate movements, mummies possess immense resilience and supernatural strength, making them far more dangerous than their shambling appearance suggests. Their bodies resist mundane weapons, and they are notoriously difficult to destroy permanently without fire, radiant magic, or powerful blessings.

One of the most feared aspects of a mummy is its curse. A creature struck by a mummy’s touch may contract a supernatural disease known as mummy rot, a lethal affliction that prevents natural healing and causes flesh to wither and decay. Left untreated, this curse can rapidly lead to death, making encounters with mummies as much a battle against time as against the creature itself. In addition, a mummy’s mere presence can instill overwhelming dread, magically paralyzing or terrifying foes who dare to face it.

In Dungeons & Dragons lore, mummies often serve as thematic symbols of forgotten empires, divine wrath, and the consequences of defying death itself. They are commonly encountered in desert tombs, ancient pyramids, and lost cities, where their existence reinforces the idea that some secrets of the past are better left undisturbed.
