A Needle Blight is a plant creature found in the wilderness of Dungeons & Dragons, typically where dark magic or corruption has seeped into the natural world. It resembles a humanoid mass of brambles and needles, often mistaken for a shrub or twisted tree from a distance. When it moves, its limbs creak like bending wood, and its body is covered in long, sharp needles capable of launching as deadly projectiles. Needle Blights are most often associated with blighted forests, cursed groves, or places where ancient druidic rites have gone wrong or been perverted.

These creatures are not merely animated plants, but manifestations of corrupted nature, driven by a malevolent instinct to destroy intruders and spread their influence. They can communicate with other blights and dark plant creatures through a rudimentary empathy or shared hive-mind, although they have no spoken language. Despite their low intelligence, they are cunning enough to ambush prey, often lying in wait near forest trails or ruins. A single Needle Blight is a threat to isolated travelers, but the real danger comes when they gather in numbers, working together to encircle and overwhelm their victims. Their preferred tactic is to lacerate foes with their clawed limbs and then fire volleys of sharp needles at any who attempt to escape.

Needle Blights were originally introduced in Curse of Strahd and later featured in multiple adventure modules and bestiaries. They are believed to originate from Gulthias trees, which are themselves spawned from dark rituals involving stakes used to kill vampires. These cursed trees give rise to several types of blights: needle, twig, and vine, each more dangerous than the last. A Needle Blight’s presence is a clear sign that something unnatural festers in the woods, and its eradication often leads adventurers into deeper threats rooted in ancient evils or forgotten necromancy.
