In Dungeons & Dragons, a pack horse is a mundane but essential animal used to transport gear, supplies, and treasure for adventuring parties. While far less glamorous than dragons or magical beasts, the pack horse plays a critical logistical role, especially in campaigns that emphasize travel, survival, and resource management. It allows characters to carry far more equipment than they could reasonably manage on their own, reducing the need to abandon valuable loot or essential provisions.
A typical pack horse is bred and trained for endurance rather than speed or combat. In game terms, it has a higher carrying capacity than most humanoid characters and can bear heavy loads over long distances without excessive fatigue. Adventurers often outfit pack horses with saddlebags, crates, bedrolls, tents, rations, spare weapons, trade goods, and even recovered treasure from dungeons. This makes them particularly valuable in wilderness exploration, long overland journeys, and dungeon expeditions far from civilization.
Despite their usefulness, pack horses are vulnerable. They are not war animals and are generally unsuited for combat, often panicking or fleeing when threatened. Because of this, parties must protect them from ambushes, monsters, harsh terrain, and environmental dangers. Losing a pack horse can mean losing food, ammunition, tools, or hard-earned wealth, creating real narrative and mechanical consequences. Dungeon Masters may use this vulnerability to add tension and realism to travel encounters.
Pack horses also contribute to worldbuilding and roleplay. They reinforce the idea that adventurers are operating within a grounded, physical world where weight, distance, and preparation matter. Caring for the animal, finding safe places to stable it, or deciding whether to bring it into dangerous territory can all create meaningful choices. Though humble, the pack horse embodies the practical side of adventuring, reminding players that success often depends not only on heroics and magic, but on planning, logistics, and respect for the limits of the physical world.
