A Shadow Lich is an undead spellcaster that has transcended traditional lichdom by merging with the essence of shadow. Unlike a standard lich, which relies on a phylactery to anchor its soul, a Shadow Lich binds its essence to the Shadowfell or a similar plane of darkness, making it even harder to permanently destroy. These entities are often former necromancers or warlocks who sought immortality beyond death, embracing the void as their final refuge.

Shadow Liches retain the immense arcane power of a typical lich but gain additional control over darkness, illusions, and necrotic energy. They can phase between the Material Plane and the Shadowfell, making them elusive and nearly impossible to contain. Their physical forms are often insubstantial, appearing as wraith-like figures with hollow eyes and flowing robes that seem to dissolve into darkness. Some have corporeal remnants, like skeletal hands or a deathly visage, but they are suffused with unnatural shadow.

Their lairs are found in places where the veil between worlds is thin—abandoned crypts, ruined castles, or deep caverns suffused with negative energy. Unlike regular liches, they do not hoard vast libraries but instead guard shadowy portals, ancient secrets, or forgotten spells. Their minions include wraiths, shadows, and other spectral undead, all bound to their master's dark will.

Defeating a Shadow Lich is an enormous challenge. Destroying its body merely forces it to reform elsewhere in darkness, and only by severing its link to the Shadowfell or trapping it in eternal light can one hope to end its existence. Some believe these creatures are drawn to great tragedies and seek to extinguish hope wherever it lingers, becoming nightmares that stalk the edges of mortal perception.
