A Shadow Wraith in Dungeons & Dragons is a powerful undead creature, often an evolution of a regular wraith infused with greater darkness and necrotic energy. Unlike standard wraiths, Shadow Wraiths are more cunning and lethal, possessing the ability to manipulate shadows and drain the life force of their victims more effectively. They exist in a state of incorporeality, allowing them to phase through walls, avoid physical attacks, and move unseen in dim light or darkness.

Shadow Wraiths are typically created when a particularly malevolent soul refuses to pass on, fueled by overwhelming hatred or an unfulfilled purpose. Some powerful necromancers or dark gods can also create them, binding them as enforcers or assassins. They are intelligent, often retaining the memories and knowledge they had in life but twisted by their undeath.

Their primary attack is a chilling, necrotic touch that saps the vitality of their enemies, sometimes turning slain foes into lesser wraiths or shadowy undead minions. Many Shadow Wraiths possess abilities to command or create additional undead, making them formidable foes when encountered in groups. Unlike ordinary wraiths, some can manipulate darkness itself, extinguishing light sources and enshrouding battlefields in supernatural gloom.

Weaknesses include radiant damage, which burns away their shadowy form, and powerful divine magic that can banish or destroy them. Sunlight is often deadly to them, as their existence is bound to darkness.

In a campaign, a Shadow Wraith can serve as a recurring villain, the lingering remnant of a fallen hero turned to evil, or the guardian of an ancient crypt. Their ability to instill fear, drain life, and summon shadowy minions makes them a terrifying opponent, especially in dark, claustrophobic settings where their powers are at their peak.
