In Dungeons & Dragons, a shark is a formidable aquatic creature, often encountered in marine settings. These predators embody the terrifying and relentless nature of the ocean. They are depicted as large, sleek, and powerful creatures, typically having sharp teeth and a voracious appetite. Sharks in D&D come in various sizes and species, ranging from the common reef shark to the enormous and legendary megalodon.

Sharks are primarily used as adversaries in underwater campaigns or in encounters where characters find themselves in oceanic or coastal regions. They are known for their keen senses, particularly their ability to detect blood in the water from great distances, making them particularly dangerous to wounded adventurers. Their powerful bite attacks can deal significant damage, often leading to critical injuries or incapacitation.

In terms of game mechanics, sharks are usually classified under the "beast" category. They have abilities that reflect their natural hunting skills, such as a high swimming speed, the ability to breathe underwater, and a notable feature called "Blood Frenzy," which grants them advantage on attack rolls against any creature that doesn't have all its hit points. This ability underscores their role as relentless hunters that become more dangerous once they smell blood.

Sharks can be utilized creatively by Dungeon Masters to add tension and danger to oceanic adventures. They can be the main threat in a scenario where characters must retrieve a sunken treasure or rescue a shipwrecked crew. Additionally, larger or more fantastical versions of sharks can be used to challenge higher-level parties, presenting a formidable test of their combat prowess and strategic planning. Whether as a direct threat or a looming danger in the background, sharks contribute significantly to the perilous and unpredictable nature of the sea in Dungeons & Dragons.
