In Dungeons & Dragons, a goose is not a standard or iconic creature found in the core rulebooks like the Monster Manual, but it can still play a surprisingly dynamic or comedic role in a campaign. While geese are real-world animals known for their territorial aggression, loud honking, and surprising boldness, their presence in D&D is often shaped more by a Dungeon Master's creativity than by official stats. However, because D&D allows for nearly limitless customization, many tables have embraced the goose as a chaotic or humorous NPC, sometimes even exaggerating its natural behavior for effect.
In many homebrew or humorous campaigns, geese are portrayed as more than just mundane animals. They may be enchanted familiars, cursed nobles, druidic guardians, or even agents of chaos sent by trickster gods. The meme-like notoriety of geese in online gaming and storytelling communities—where they are depicted as aggressive, thieving, and disruptive—has influenced their use in D&D settings. A goose in such a campaign might steal magical items, disrupt a stealth mission with loud honking, or inexplicably foil an evil scheme simply by existing at the wrong place and time. Some homebrew bestiaries even provide stat blocks for “dire geese,” “honk elementals,” or “celestial goose mounts.”
Mechanically, a standard goose could use the statistics of a goose-sized bird, such as a goose reskinned from the “goat” or “hawk” stat block, depending on its intended role. But it’s not the stats that make the goose memorable in D&D. Instead, it’s the roleplay opportunities, unexpected consequences, and narrative flair that come from players or DMs incorporating geese into the world. Whether as a minor annoyance, comedic relief, or a bizarre plot point, geese in D&D have carved out a small niche as agents of mischief and unpredictability, often remembered long after more serious encounters fade from memory.
