In Dungeons & Dragons, Thor is not a standard part of the core rules or default pantheon, but he does appear in the game through the incorporation of real-world mythologies, particularly the Norse pantheon. Thor, the Norse god of thunder, is often included in D&D campaigns that use the Deities & Demigods sourcebook or similar supplements, where real-world mythological figures are adapted for gameplay. In these settings, Thor is portrayed much as he is in mythology: a powerful, boisterous warrior-god known for his immense strength, unshakable courage, and mastery over storms and lightning. He is typically depicted wielding his iconic hammer, Mjölnir, which returns to his hand when thrown and serves as a symbol of divine retribution and protection.
Thor is often worshipped by warriors, especially those who value bravery and honor in combat. Clerics, paladins, and even barbarians may revere him as a patron deity. In campaigns where the Norse pantheon is active, Thor’s domain often includes Tempest, War, or Storm, granting divine spellcasters thunder- and lightning-themed abilities that reflect his mythic portfolio. Thor's presence in the world can manifest as booming thunderstorms, sudden lightning strikes, or even divine visions urging mortals to defend the innocent or punish the wicked.
In terms of character inspiration, Thor can be the model for PCs or NPCs who are thunder-themed warriors or divine champions. A player might build a tempest cleric or storm sorcerer channeling Thor’s essence, or even create a literal descendant or chosen of the god, imbued with his strength and tasked with furthering his ideals in the mortal realm.
Although he is not unique to D&D, Thor’s mythic stature allows him to be seamlessly integrated into a variety of settings, particularly those inspired by Viking culture, planar cosmologies, or epic high-fantasy tales involving gods who walk among mortals.
