A Tree Blight in Dungeons & Dragons is a type of plant-based monster often found in natural, forested, or overgrown environments. It is a corrupted or twisted form of plant life, animated by dark magic or malevolent forces, and typically hostile to living creatures. Tree Blights embody the concept of nature turned dangerous and unnatural, often linked to curses, evil druids, or corrupted fey influences.
In most editions, Tree Blights appear as large, humanoid or vaguely humanoid plants, made of wood, vines, leaves, and thorns. Their bodies are typically gnarled and covered with bark, sometimes resembling twisted trees or shrubs that have come to life. They move with a slow, deliberate gait but are strong and durable due to their wooden composition. Their limbs might end in sharp thorns or jagged wooden spikes, which they use to lash out at foes.
Mechanically, Tree Blights serve as monsters that challenge adventurers primarily through melee attacks, often using their thorny limbs to grapple and damage opponents. Some versions feature two subtypes: Needle Blights and Twig Blights. Needle Blights are smaller and more agile, using ranged attacks like thorny needles or projectiles, while Twig Blights are more basic, smaller creatures that swarm enemies in groups.
Tree Blights usually have abilities reflecting their plant nature, such as immunity or resistance to poison and charm effects. They may also have traits like camouflage in forested terrain or the ability to animate and control other plants around them. Their presence in a forest or wild area often indicates that the environment is corrupted or under the influence of dark magic, making them common antagonists in campaigns featuring corrupted woods or blighted lands.
Narratively, Tree Blights are often used to create an eerie atmosphere, emphasizing the theme of nature gone awry. They can be the result of a druid’s failed experiment, a fey curse, or the influence of an evil spirit, making them versatile foes for low- to mid-level adventurers. Their eerie appearance and connection to natural environments also make them excellent plot devices to hint at a greater threat corrupting the land.
