In Dungeons & Dragons, the Wendigo is a terrifying creature often inspired by Algonquian folklore, embodying hunger, madness, and supernatural horror. While not always an official part of D&D core rulebooks, various editions and third-party supplements have included versions of the Wendigo as monstrous entities driven by insatiable cannibalistic hunger.
Typically, a Wendigo is depicted as a gaunt, skeletal being with elongated limbs, glowing eyes, and a stag-like skull or distorted humanoid face. It roams frozen wastelands, preying on the lost and desperate. Legends say that those who commit cannibalism in extreme conditions risk transforming into a Wendigo, cursed to eternally hunger for flesh. This tragic origin makes it both a monster and a cautionary tale.
Mechanically, Wendigos are often powerful undead or fiendish creatures with abilities like fear-inducing howls, supernatural speed, and regeneration. Many versions can phase through trees, fly despite their emaciated forms, or curse victims with madness. Their presence warps reality, instilling paranoia and driving travelers to starvation and despair.
In campaigns, Wendigos make excellent horror antagonists. They can stalk a winter-bound village, corrupt desperate survivors, or haunt cursed forests. Their mythic nature allows DMs to use them as symbols of nature’s wrath or as tragic figures embodying the consequences of desperate survival. Unlike simple predators, Wendigos offer deep storytelling potential, blending psychological terror with physical menace.
While official D&D sources have rarely standardized the Wendigo, many homebrew settings and third-party books embrace it as an iconic horror creature. Whether as a unique boss monster or the lurking menace of winter, the Wendigo remains one of the most chilling foes a party can encounter.
