A werewolf in Dungeons & Dragons is a type of lycanthrope, a humanoid cursed with the ability to shapeshift between human, hybrid, and wolf forms. They are often seen as savage predators, embodying both human intelligence and bestial ferocity. Werewolves can be natural-born or afflicted through a bite from another lycanthrope, and those who embrace their curse become ruthless hunters.
In combat, werewolves are formidable due to their immunity to nonmagical or non-silvered weapons, making them highly resistant to conventional attacks. Their enhanced physical abilities, such as heightened Strength and keen senses, allow them to track prey effortlessly. The hybrid form is the most dangerous, blending humanoid dexterity with the raw power of a wolf.
Afflicted characters struggle with the werewolf’s influence, facing involuntary transformations during the full moon and potential loss of self-control. A character who fully embraces lycanthropy gains great power but risks losing their original identity, becoming more bestial in nature. Conversely, resisting the curse allows them to retain their mind but forces them to endure the painful transformations.
Curing lycanthropy is difficult, usually requiring strong magic such as Remove Curse before the transformation becomes permanent. Some adventurers seek out werewolves intentionally, either to hunt them or to gain their supernatural abilities. Werewolf packs often form in the wilderness, preying on isolated villages or serving dark masters.
Thematically, werewolves in D&D explore themes of duality, loss of control, and the struggle between civilization and primal instinct. Whether as foes or as a personal curse, they add an element of horror and moral conflict to any campaign, making them a compelling aspect of the game’s mythology.
