A Dutch Shepherd is a versatile and intelligent herding dog originating from the Netherlands. Historically, they were used by farmers to herd sheep and protect livestock, but over time they’ve also served as police, search-and-rescue, and guard dogs due to their agility, alertness, and strong work ethic.

Dutch Shepherds are medium-sized dogs, typically weighing between 55 and 70 pounds (25–32 kg) and standing about 21–25 inches (53–63 cm) tall at the shoulder. They have a lean, muscular build, giving them both speed and endurance. Their coat comes in three main varieties: short-haired, long-haired, and rough-haired, usually with a brindle pattern that can be gold-and-brindle, silver-and-brindle, or less commonly, sand-colored.

Temperament-wise, Dutch Shepherds are known for their loyalty, intelligence, and trainability. They form strong bonds with their families, are protective, and thrive on mental and physical stimulation. Without proper exercise or tasks, they can become bored or restless, which may lead to destructive behavior. They excel in dog sports like agility, obedience, and herding trials, as well as in working roles such as police or service work.

They are generally healthy dogs with a lifespan of around 12–14 years, though hip and elbow dysplasia can occasionally be a concern. Dutch Shepherds require consistent training, socialization from an early age, and a job or regular activity to satisfy their high energy and working instincts.

In short, the Dutch Shepherd is an athletic, intelligent, and loyal dog that thrives in an active household or working environment, making them excellent companions for experienced dog owners who can meet their mental and physical needs.
