A fallow deer (often misspelled as "fallow dear") is a species of deer known for its distinctive appearance and adaptability. Scientifically called Dama dama, they are medium-sized deer native to Europe but have been introduced to many other parts of the world. Fallow deer are most recognizable by their coat patterns, which vary by season and type. The common coat is a reddish-brown with white spots during the summer, fading to a duller grey-brown in winter. Some fallow deer also have darker or even almost black coats, known as melanistic variants.

Male fallow deer, called bucks, grow broad, flattened antlers that are palmate—meaning they spread out like the palm of a hand with points along the edges. These antlers are shed and regrown each year. Female fallow deer, called does, usually lack antlers. Fallow deer are social animals that often form herds. Bucks may form small bachelor groups outside the mating season, while does and their fawns stay in larger herds.

They are herbivores, grazing on grass, leaves, fruits, and sometimes shoots and bark. Fallow deer are adaptable and can live in woodlands, grasslands, and even parklands. Their graceful movements, distinctive spotted coats, and elegant antlers make them popular in wildlife parks and estates, and they have also been hunted historically for sport and meat.

In short, a fallow deer is a medium-sized, often spotted deer with unique, flattened antlers in males, native to Europe but widespread due to human introduction.
