A Flat-Coated Retriever is a medium-to-large breed of gundog originally developed in the 19th century in Britain. Bred as a multipurpose retriever, it was designed to work both on land and in water, retrieving game for hunters. The breed is notable for its joyful temperament, boundless energy, and its distinctive long, sleek black or liver-colored coat, which lies flat against the body and gives the breed its name.

Physically, Flat-Coated Retrievers are athletic, with a strong yet elegant build. They typically weigh between 60 to 80 pounds and stand around 22 to 24.5 inches at the shoulder. Their heads are described as “one-piece,” meaning long and clean with a relatively shallow stop and a friendly, intelligent expression. Their tails are well-feathered and carried gaily, which often enhances their happy and lively appearance.

The breed is often called the “Peter Pan” of retrievers because it retains a puppy-like enthusiasm and playfulness well into adulthood. They are outgoing, affectionate, and highly sociable, thriving on human companionship and often doing poorly if left alone for long periods. Their cheerful demeanor makes them excellent family dogs, though their exuberance may be overwhelming for very small children unless carefully managed.

In terms of working ability, Flat-Coated Retrievers excel in retrieving, swimming, and agility. They were once among the most popular gundogs in Britain but were overshadowed in the 20th century by the Labrador and Golden Retrievers. Still, they remain admired for their versatility, intelligence, and stamina.

Owners should be prepared for a high-energy, people-oriented dog that needs daily exercise and mental stimulation. They are trainable but can be mischievous, often requiring patience and positive reinforcement. With proper care, they live on average 8 to 10 years, though some reach older ages.
