A Friesian Stabij, also known as the Stabyhoun or Stabij, is a rare dog breed originating from the Friesland region in the Netherlands. This breed is known for its versatility, intelligence, and calm temperament. Historically, Stabijs were used on farms as hunting dogs, ratters, and general farm companions, making them highly practical and adaptable.
Physically, Friesian Stabijs are medium-sized dogs, typically weighing between 25–30 kilograms (55–66 lbs) and standing about 50–55 cm (20–22 inches) at the shoulder. They have a sturdy but elegant build, with a long, slightly wavy coat that is usually black or brown with distinctive white markings on the chest, legs, and face. Their ears are long and floppy, and their expressive eyes give them a friendly, intelligent appearance.
Temperament-wise, Stabijs are known for being gentle, loyal, and affectionate, making them excellent family pets. They are intelligent and trainable but can be independent, so consistent, positive training is recommended. They also have a moderate energy level—they enjoy outdoor activities and play but are calm indoors.
Health-wise, the breed is generally robust, but due to its small population, responsible breeding practices are important to avoid hereditary issues. Socialization from a young age is key, as it helps them develop confidence around strangers, other animals, and different environments.
Overall, the Friesian Stabij is a rare, versatile, and devoted companion, combining hunting instincts with a loving, family-oriented personality. Their rarity makes them somewhat expensive and hard to find outside the Netherlands.
