A frog is a small, tailless amphibian belonging to the order Anura, which literally means “without tail.” Frogs are cold-blooded vertebrates with smooth, moist skin, strong hind legs adapted for jumping, and webbed feet in many species for swimming. They are found worldwide, mostly in or near freshwater habitats like ponds, lakes, and rivers, though some species thrive in rainforests, deserts, and even mountains.

Frogs have a unique life cycle called metamorphosis. They begin as eggs laid in water, which hatch into aquatic larvae called tadpoles. Tadpoles have gills, tails, and no legs. Over time, they undergo dramatic changes: they develop legs, absorb their tails, grow lungs, and transition to a primarily terrestrial or semi-aquatic adult form capable of breathing air.

Frogs are carnivorous and mostly eat insects, worms, and other small invertebrates. Their long, sticky tongues allow them to catch prey with impressive speed. Some larger species can even eat small vertebrates. Frogs are also known for their vocalizations; males produce calls to attract mates, which vary from croaks and ribbits to trills and peeps.

Ecologically, frogs play a critical role. They help control insect populations and serve as both predator and prey in their ecosystems. They are also considered bioindicators, meaning their presence and health reflect the quality of the environment, as they are highly sensitive to pollution, climate change, and habitat loss.

Interestingly, frogs exhibit remarkable diversity: they range from tiny species less than a centimeter long to giant species exceeding 30 centimeters. They have evolved a variety of adaptations, including camouflage, poison glands, and specialized reproductive strategies, making them one of the most versatile and fascinating amphibians on Earth.

This Bust is 15cm tall.
