A gecko is a small to medium-sized lizard belonging to the family Gekkonidae, known for their unique adaptations that allow them to climb smooth surfaces and even walk upside down on ceilings. They are found worldwide, primarily in warm climates, from tropical rainforests to deserts. Geckos vary widely in size, color, and patterns, with some species displaying vivid colors and markings for camouflage or signaling.

One of the most distinctive features of geckos is their toe pads, which are covered in tiny hair-like structures called setae. These setae exploit molecular forces known as van der Waals forces, allowing geckos to adhere to surfaces without liquids or adhesives. This gives them incredible climbing abilities. Some species can also shed their tails to escape predators, a process called autotomy, and later regenerate it, though usually with slight differences from the original tail.

Geckos are mostly nocturnal, meaning they are active at night, and many have large, lidless eyes with vertical pupils, which give them excellent night vision. Unlike many lizards, most geckos do not have eyelids and instead clean their eyes with their tongues.

They are insectivorous, feeding primarily on insects, spiders, and other small invertebrates, though some larger species may eat fruit or nectar. Geckos are also popular in the pet trade due to their manageable size, fascinating behaviors, and relatively simple care requirements.

In summary, geckos are remarkable reptiles with specialized climbing abilities, nocturnal habits, and unique biological features that make them both fascinating in the wild and appealing as pets.

This Bust is 15cm tall.
