A Gordon Setter is a large, elegant gundog breed originally developed in Scotland. Recognized as one of the four setter breeds, it was bred primarily for hunting game birds such as grouse and pheasant. Unlike some of the lighter, faster setters, the Gordon Setter was designed to be more deliberate and methodical in the field, using stamina and determination rather than sheer speed. The breed takes its name from the 4th Duke of Gordon, who in the early 19th century refined and promoted this line of setters on his Scottish estates.

Physically, the Gordon Setter is distinguished by its striking black-and-tan coat, long and silky feathering on the chest, belly, ears, tail, and legs, and its strong, athletic build. It is the heaviest of the setter breeds, typically standing between 23 to 27 inches at the shoulder and weighing around 45 to 80 pounds, depending on sex and build. The head is noble, with a long muzzle, expressive dark brown eyes, and low-set ears that hang close to the head. The tail is carried horizontally and has a characteristic fan of feathering.

In temperament, Gordon Setters are known for their loyalty, intelligence, and affectionate nature. They bond closely with their families and can be both gentle companions and energetic working dogs. Because of their hunting background, they require regular exercise and mental stimulation to remain happy, often thriving with activities like field trials, obedience, or agility training. While affectionate, they can also be somewhat reserved with strangers, making them good watchdogs compared to other setters.

Their grooming needs are moderate, as the long coat requires brushing to prevent tangling, especially in the feathered areas, and regular checks for burrs and debris picked up outdoors. With proper care, Gordon Setters typically live around 12 years. Today, they remain valued as both loyal family dogs and capable sporting companions.
