A greyhound is a breed of dog known for its slender, aerodynamic build and incredible speed. They are one of the oldest dog breeds, with a history dating back thousands of years, often associated with hunting and coursing game due to their keen eyesight and agility. Greyhounds typically have long legs, a narrow body, a deep chest, and a long, tapering tail, all of which contribute to their ability to run at high speeds—up to 45 miles per hour (72 km/h) in short bursts.

Greyhounds have a short, smooth coat that comes in many colors, including black, white, fawn, brindle, and combinations thereof. Their temperament is usually gentle, friendly, and intelligent, making them excellent pets despite their history as racing or hunting dogs. They are surprisingly calm indoors and are often referred to as “couch potatoes” because they enjoy lounging and resting for much of the day, even though they require regular exercise to stay healthy.

Historically, greyhounds were prized by nobility for hunting deer and hare, and later became popular in dog racing. Modern greyhounds are often retired from racing and adopted as companion animals. Their lean bodies and low body fat mean they are sensitive to cold, so they may need coats in chilly weather.
