Hades is a figure from Greek mythology, most famously known as the god of the underworld. He rules over the realm of the dead, a shadowy place where souls go after death. Hades is one of the three sons of the Titans Cronus and Rhea, making him the brother of Zeus, the king of the gods, and Poseidon, god of the sea. Unlike some gods, Hades is not typically associated with evil; instead, he governs the inevitable aspect of death and the afterlife, ensuring that the dead remain in his domain.
The underworld itself, sometimes called “Hades” after the god, is often depicted as a vast, dark, and somber place divided into regions, including the Elysian Fields (for the virtuous), Tartarus (for the wicked), and the Asphodel Meadows (for ordinary souls). Hades is usually portrayed with symbols like the Cerberus, a three-headed dog that guards the entrance to prevent the dead from leaving; a bident, similar to a trident; and the Helm of Darkness, which can render him invisible.
Hades is also linked to wealth and the earth’s hidden treasures because precious metals and fertile soil come from beneath the ground. One of the most famous myths involving him is the abduction of Persephone, whom he made his queen, explaining the cycle of the seasons: when Persephone is in the underworld, the earth experiences winter; when she returns, spring begins.
