A hedgehog is a small, nocturnal mammal known for its distinctive coat of spines or quills, which are modified hairs made of keratin. These spines serve as a defense mechanism: when threatened, a hedgehog can curl into a tight ball, exposing only its spiny exterior to potential predators. Hedgehogs are found across Europe, Asia, and Africa, and some species are also kept as pets in various parts of the world.

Hedgehogs are omnivorous, feeding on insects, worms, small invertebrates, and occasionally fruits and vegetables. They have a keen sense of smell and hearing, which helps them locate food at night, as they are primarily nocturnal creatures. Despite their protective spines, hedgehogs are relatively small and slow-moving, usually ranging from 5 to 12 inches in length.

In addition to their defensive curling behavior, hedgehogs have other interesting habits. They hibernate in colder climates, slowing their metabolism during winter months to conserve energy. Socially, most species are solitary, coming together only to mate.

Hedgehogs have also become popular in culture and as pets, often appreciated for their cute appearance and gentle nature, though they require specialized care to thrive in captivity. Wild hedgehogs play a beneficial role in controlling insect populations, making them important for garden ecosystems.
