A hedgehog is a small, nocturnal mammal known for its distinctive coat of spines, which are actually modified hairs. These spines provide protection from predators: when threatened, a hedgehog can roll into a tight, spiky ball, leaving only its spines exposed. Hedgehogs belong to the family Erinaceidae, and there are several species spread across Europe, Asia, and Africa. They are not related to porcupines, despite the similar appearance of their spines.

Hedgehogs are primarily insectivores, feeding on insects, worms, snails, and occasionally small vertebrates or plant matter. They have a keen sense of smell and hearing, which helps them hunt at night. Their eyesight is relatively poor, but they rely on other senses to navigate and find food.

These animals are mostly solitary, coming together only to mate. They build nests from leaves, grass, or other natural materials for shelter and hibernation in colder climates. Hedgehogs can live up to 3–7 years in the wild, although some species live longer in captivity.

Hedgehogs have also become popular as pets in some parts of the world, though they require specific care, including proper diet, habitat, and temperature. In folklore and culture, they are often seen as symbols of protection, resourcefulness, and curiosity due to their spiny defense and careful, deliberate movements.
