In Greek mythology, Hermes is one of the Olympian gods and is primarily known as the messenger of the gods. He is the son of Zeus and the nymph Maia. Hermes is associated with speed, communication, trade, travel, boundaries, and trickery. He is clever, cunning, and highly versatile, often bridging the mortal and divine worlds.

He is usually depicted with winged sandals (talaria) that allow him to fly, a winged hat (petasos), and a caduceus, a staff entwined with two snakes, which symbolizes commerce and negotiation. Hermes was also considered the guide of souls to the underworld, helping the dead reach Hades.

Unlike many gods tied to war, love, or the elements, Hermes embodies movement and transitions—he can travel freely between the divine, mortal, and underworld realms. He is also known as a trickster, famous for his cleverness and wit; myths often depict him stealing from other gods or using clever schemes to solve problems.

Hermes’ roles include being the patron of messengers, thieves, travelers, merchants, and athletes, highlighting his versatility. In art and literature, he’s often shown as youthful, energetic, and sly, reflecting his adaptable and mischievous personality.
