A Highland cow is a distinctive breed of cattle originating from the Scottish Highlands. They are most recognizable for their long, shaggy coat, which can be red, black, yellow, dun, or even white, and their long, curved horns. This thick double-layered coat allows them to survive the harsh, cold, and wet climate of the Highlands, making them one of the hardiest cattle breeds in the world.

Highland cows are generally smaller than other cattle breeds, with a sturdy and stocky build, which helps them navigate rough terrain. Their calm and docile temperament makes them easier to manage despite their formidable horns. They are primarily raised for beef, which is lean, flavorful, and high in protein, though they are also kept for conservation grazing and as tourist attractions because of their striking appearance.

Historically, Highland cattle have been bred for centuries in Scotland, and they are one of the oldest registered cattle breeds in the world. Their ability to graze on poor-quality vegetation means they can survive in areas where other cattle might struggle, playing an important role in maintaining the natural landscape of the Highlands.

In short, Highland cows are iconic, hardy, long-haired cattle known for their horns, adaptability, and gentle nature, often seen as a symbol of Scottish rural life.
