A hippopotamus, often called a “hippo,” is a large, mostly herbivorous mammal native to sub-Saharan Africa. Its name comes from the Greek words hippos (horse) and potamos (river), literally meaning “river horse.” Hippos are semi-aquatic, spending much of their time in rivers, lakes, and swamps to keep their massive bodies cool and hydrated under the hot African sun.

Physically, hippos are enormous, with adults weighing between 1,500 to 4,500 kilograms (3,300–9,900 pounds), and they have thick, nearly hairless skin that secretes a natural reddish substance acting as both a sunscreen and antibacterial layer. Despite their barrel-shaped bodies and short legs, hippos are surprisingly fast on land, capable of running up to 30 km/h (19 mph) over short distances. In water, they are graceful swimmers and can hold their breath for up to five minutes, walking or pushing off the riverbed.

Hippos are herbivores, primarily grazing on grasses at night, though they occasionally eat aquatic plants. Socially, they are highly territorial in water, forming groups called pods, herds, or bloats, typically led by a dominant male. Despite their somewhat docile appearance, hippos are extremely aggressive and are considered one of the most dangerous large animals in Africa, responsible for more human fatalities than lions or elephants.

Their unique combination of size, aquatic adaptation, and powerful jaws with large canine tusks makes them iconic in both wildlife ecosystems and human culture, often symbolizing strength and unpredictability.
