A kangaroo is a marsupial native to Australia, known for its distinctive hopping movement, strong hind legs, large feet, and long tail, which it uses for balance. Marsupials are mammals that carry and nurse their young in a pouch, and kangaroos are one of the most famous examples. There are several species of kangaroos, including the red kangaroo, eastern grey kangaroo, and western grey kangaroo, each varying in size, color, and habitat.

Kangaroos are herbivores, primarily feeding on grasses and other vegetation. Their powerful hind legs allow them to travel long distances efficiently, with speeds of up to 35 miles per hour (56 km/h) and leaps covering more than 25 feet (7.5 meters) in a single bound. Their muscular tail helps with balance and acts as a third leg when standing or moving slowly.

Socially, kangaroos often live in groups called mobs, which can range from a few individuals to dozens, providing protection against predators. Male kangaroos, known as boomers, often compete for dominance and mating rights through boxing-like fights using their strong legs and claws. Females, or flyers, carry their young—called joeys—in their pouch for several months after birth until they are mature enough to survive outside.

Kangaroos are also iconic symbols of Australia, appearing in national emblems, logos, and currency. Despite their cultural popularity, they can sometimes be considered pests in agricultural areas due to their grazing habits. Their unique biology, including hopping locomotion, pouch-based reproduction, and powerful hind limbs, makes them one of the most remarkable and recognizable animals in the world.
