A koala is a tree-dwelling marsupial native to Australia, easily recognized by its round, fluffy ears, large nose, and thick, grayish fur. Despite often being called a "koala bear," it is not a bear; it belongs to the marsupial family, meaning females carry and nurse their young in a pouch. Koalas are primarily nocturnal, spending most of the day sleeping—up to 18–22 hours—because their diet of eucalyptus leaves is low in calories and requires a lot of energy to digest.

Eucalyptus leaves are toxic to most animals, but koalas have a highly specialized digestive system, including an enlarged cecum, to break down the leaves and extract nutrients. They are generally solitary, with each koala having a defined home range, although ranges can overlap. Communication involves grunts, snores, and bellows, especially during mating season.

Koalas are considered a vulnerable species due to habitat destruction, bushfires, disease (like chlamydia), and climate change. Conservation efforts focus on preserving eucalyptus forests, controlling disease, and sometimes rehabilitating injured or orphaned koalas.

In short, the koala is a unique, slow-moving, leaf-eating marsupial famous for its cuddly appearance but highly specialized and fragile lifestyle.
