A Kooikerhondje is a small to medium-sized dog breed originating from the Netherlands. Its name roughly translates to “little duck dog,” reflecting its historical role in duck hunting. These dogs were traditionally used to lure ducks into traps called kooien, helping hunters capture them—a skill that required intelligence, patience, and agility.
Physically, Kooikerhondjes have a compact, balanced build with a slightly longer body than height, giving them an athletic yet elegant appearance. They have medium-length, wavy fur that is predominantly white with red or orange-red patches, often with a characteristic black tip on the ears. Their expressive, dark eyes and feathery tails give them a friendly and alert look.
Temperament-wise, they are known for being intelligent, lively, and affectionate. They bond closely with their family but can be reserved with strangers. Highly trainable, they thrive in environments where they have tasks to perform or activities to engage in, making them excellent in dog sports such as agility, obedience, and tracking. Because of their hunting background, they have a moderate prey drive and enjoy outdoor activities.
Kooikerhondjes are generally healthy, but they can be prone to hereditary conditions like von Willebrand disease, patellar luxation, or hip dysplasia, so responsible breeding is important. They require regular mental stimulation and moderate exercise to prevent boredom.
In short, the Kooikerhondje is a charming, intelligent, and energetic companion that combines the skills of a working dog with the devotion of a family pet. They’re relatively rare outside the Netherlands, so encountering one can be quite special.
