The Lagotto Romagnolo is a medium-sized dog breed originating from the Romagna region of Italy. Historically, it was bred as a water retriever, used to fetch game from marshes and wetlands, but today it is best known for its exceptional talent in truffle hunting. This breed is highly valued for its keen sense of smell, intelligence, and trainable nature.
Lagottos have a distinctive, curly coat that is dense, woolly, and hypoallergenic, often described as feeling similar to a soft lamb’s fleece. Their coat comes in colors such as off-white, brown, orange, or roan patterns, and requires regular grooming to prevent matting. They have expressive eyes, typically brown, with an alert and friendly expression.
Temperament-wise, Lagottos are affectionate, loyal, and playful, making them excellent companions for active families. They are known to bond closely with their owners and can be wary of strangers if not properly socialized. Their intelligence and eagerness to please make them highly trainable, though they require mental stimulation and physical exercise to stay happy.
Because of their truffle-hunting heritage, they have a strong prey drive and love to dig and explore, so providing outlets for their natural instincts is important. Lagottos are generally healthy, with a lifespan of around 14 to 16 years, but can be prone to some genetic conditions such as hip dysplasia or certain types of storage diseases.
Overall, the Lagotto Romagnolo is a versatile, energetic, and affectionate breed, ideal for active owners who enjoy outdoor activities and are willing to invest time in training and grooming.
