A lion is a large carnivorous mammal belonging to the species Panthera leo, native primarily to Africa and a small region in India. Lions are known for their muscular build, deep chest, and strong, powerful limbs, making them apex predators in their ecosystems. Males are distinguished by a mane of long hair around their necks, which varies in color from blond to black and serves as a display of strength and maturity. Female lions, called lionesses, are generally smaller and do not have manes.
Lions are social animals, unusual among big cats, living in groups called prides. A pride typically consists of related females, their offspring, and a small number of adult males. Lionesses do most of the hunting, working cooperatively to bring down large prey such as zebras, wildebeest, and buffalo, while males protect the pride’s territory from rivals.
