A llama is a domesticated South American mammal closely related to the camel, but it does not have a hump. Native to the Andes Mountains, llamas have been used by humans for thousands of years as pack animals, for their wool, and occasionally for meat. They are social herd animals, often kept with other llamas or alpacas, and are known for their gentle but sometimes stubborn nature.
Adult llamas typically stand about 5.5 to 6 feet tall at the head and weigh between 250 and 450 pounds. They have long necks, large eyes, and a thick woolly coat that can range in color from white and brown to black and spotted patterns. Their wool is prized for being soft, lightweight, and warm, making it useful for textiles like clothing and blankets.
Llamas are herbivores, grazing on grasses and other plants. They are well-adapted to high-altitude environments, with efficient lungs and blood to handle lower oxygen levels. One interesting behavior is their ability to spit when annoyed or threatened, usually as a warning rather than a serious attack.
Besides practical uses, llamas have cultural significance in Andean societies and have become popular worldwide as friendly, approachable animals for farms, petting zoos, and therapy programs. They are often confused with alpacas, which are smaller, have denser wool, and are bred more specifically for fiber production.
In short, llamas are versatile, hardy, and intelligent animals with a long history of coexistence with humans.
