A long-haired Dachshund is a specific variety of the Dachshund breed, which is a small, elongated dog originally bred in Germany for hunting badgers and other burrowing animals. Unlike the smooth-coated or wire-haired Dachshunds, long-haired Dachshunds have a soft, slightly wavy coat that is longer around the ears, chest, belly, legs, and tail, giving them a more elegant, flowing appearance. Their fur requires regular grooming to prevent tangles and mats, which is less of an issue for their smooth-coated counterparts.

Long-haired Dachshunds share the same distinctive body shape as other Dachshunds: a long back, short legs, and a deep chest. They are sturdy and surprisingly agile despite their low stature. Their temperament tends to be lively, intelligent, and affectionate, with a strong sense of loyalty to their owners. They can also inherit the Dachshund’s characteristic boldness and hunting instincts, often making them alert watchdogs.

Because of their long coat, these Dachshunds often appear more refined and sometimes more delicate than the other coat types. They can come in a variety of colors, including black and tan, chocolate, cream, and dapple patterns. Their long hair gives them extra protection against cold weather, though they still need care to avoid getting chilled.

Overall, a long-haired Dachshund combines the breed’s classic spirited personality with a visually striking, silky coat that sets it apart from other Dachshunds, requiring more grooming and attention but often being considered particularly charming and elegant.
