Medusa is a figure from Greek mythology, most famously one of the three Gorgons. She is typically depicted as a woman with snakes for hair, and anyone who looks directly at her turns to stone. Unlike her immortal sisters, Medusa is mortal, which makes her unique among the Gorgons.

Her story varies depending on the source, but one of the most well-known versions is that Medusa was originally a beautiful woman who was transformed into a monster by the goddess Athena. This punishment came either because Medusa was proud of her beauty or because she was violated by the sea god Poseidon in Athena’s temple—Athena’s wrath fell on Medusa rather than Poseidon.

Medusa’s gaze is her most famous weapon, capable of petrifying anyone who meets her eyes. Despite her fearsome abilities, she is sometimes depicted as a tragic figure rather than a pure villain.

Her death is most famously recounted in the myth of the hero Perseus. Armed with a mirrored shield from Athena, Perseus avoided her direct gaze and decapitated her. From Medusa’s blood sprang Pegasus, the winged horse, and Chrysaor, a giant or warrior, depending on the version. After her death, her head retained its petrifying power and was used by Perseus as a weapon.

Medusa’s image has endured through history, symbolizing danger, protection, and even female rage. She is often portrayed in art, literature, and modern culture as both a monster and a symbol of empowerment or vengeance.
